Autumn 2

Our theme for this half term is 'Let's Get Creative!' and Reception and Year One have enjoyed learning about a range of artists and artistic styles.

We have an 'Art Gallery' in our classroom for this theme which displays work by a different artist each week and resources to create a piece of art inspired by them.

We started with Henri Matisse and specifically his cut out art works. Everyone enjoyed exploring colour, shape and position with their art work in this week and created some fantastic and colourful art work.

Matisse Cut Outs

Yayoi Kusama was our featured artist in our second week and we explored pattern and printing alongside her vibrant work. We had coloured stickers which we used to stick onto real objects and around our classroom too and we had circular stamps to create printed art work as well.

Our Artist of the Week in the third week of this half term was Wassily Kandinsky and everyone enjoyed making geometrical art work inspired by this artist. We looked for objects around the classroom which had square, triangular or circular faces and used these as stencils to draw around. When we had drawn around several objects, we coloured our picture in using oil pastels.

Week Four of this half term marked the conclusion of our Art Gallery and we had one final Artist of the Week - Piet Mondrian. The class loved his art work as they were particularly drawn to the grids and vibrant, block colours. We recreated his art work by sticking electrical tape to a piece of A3 paper and then painting the sections red, blue or yellow.

Spring 1

This half term, our theme was 'Polar Regions' and we loved learning about everything to do with the Arctic and Antarctica. We started the half term by learning about animals which live in the two polar regions and we even had our very own penguin egg in the classroom!

During this topic, we took a closer look at the communities of indigenous people who live in the Arctic. After learning that these communities are varied and spread across the whole Arctic region, we learnt in detail about the indigenous people of Canada as one of our students has Canadian heritage. We learnt about their culture, their history and their beliefs as well as how indigenous people in Canada are treated and respected today.

Spring 2

'Global Stories' is the theme for this half term and we have been reading books which are set in Kenya. We learnt about the country and compared many aspects of it to our own. Our first book was 'Handa's Surprise' and we had to begin this learning with some fruit tasting! We tried bananas, mangoes, pineapples, guavas, passionfruit, tangerines and oranges and most of us enjoyed them!

We also love singing in the class and one of our songs for this half term has been a real hit - Yellow Submarine by the Beatles! The class loved learning this song so much that we decorated our Rhyme Corner with our own yellow submarines.

The Spring term has been a great term for school trips too. We visited the Oriental Museum in Durham and learnt all about the Chinese New Year. We have also taken a trip to a working farm and here we learnt all about farm animals, how farms are run, and the importance of good soil!
